During COVID-19 we want to make sure we are keeping all of our 4-H families up to date as much as we possibly can! During this time we will be releasing the “Friday News” where we will hopefully answer any questions you may have; these will also be available on our website to view. The entire Wyoming County 4-H staff is here for anything you and your families may need during this time so please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us with your question(s)!


Livestock Updates…

  • YQCA (Youth for the Quality Care of Animals) Training - Coupons are still available for the YQCA training that is required by the meat animal BEEF, LAMB, AND SWINE projects for participation in the online auction. This program can be done online and provides approximately 60 minutes of guided education on food safety, animal well-being, and character awareness for youth raising and showing livestock.   • Meat Animal Auction Updates – Auction Participants, keep an eye on your mailboxes this week for important information regarding the auction including where and how to upload your auction/judging photos, your sale flyers and the packets that our previous buyers received for your knowledge. As always, if you have anything questions please reach out sooner than later! All photos must be submitted by Sunday, July 26th. Thank you again for your patience as we work through this very new process.It is more important than ever to reach out to potential bidders and buyers over the next month to tell them about your projects and how they can still participate!
  • Market Broiler Chicken Updates - Keep an eye on your mailboxes this week for important information regarding the auction including where and how to upload your educational posters/project birds/show ready close ups, your sale flyers and the packets that our previous buyers received for your knowledge. As always, if you have anything questions please reach out sooner than later! All photos must be submitted by Sunday, July 26th. Family & Consumer Science Updates…

  • If youth are interested in submitting static projects for evaluation this year – crafts, vegetables, foods, woodworking, etc. the deadline to ‘pre-register’ for attendance is July 31st! This registration is to determine how many youth we can expect for these in person evaluations August 21st to limit contact and group gatherings. Please contact the 4-H office with any questions or concerns regarding these modified Youth Building evaluations.   • Gladiola Project Participants! Don’t forget to email Sarah at sac347@cornell.edu if you’re interested in participating in the showing demonstration and evaluation experience at Spencer’s Gladiolus, Oatka Rd., Perry Monday August 17th. At 6pm the demonstration will begin, where novice youth will learn how to display a single spike, corsage or arrangement. 7pm will begin the evaluations of the items created during that first hour, and for more experienced youth who want to bring their items for evaluation and recognition. All participants should bring a few spikes of their own gladiolus if they have them, and a small container if they want to create an arrangement. This year’s arrangement themes are up to the individual! All youth will be recognized for participating.

  • Don’t forget all entry forms for the Dog Show at Camp Wyomoco August 15th are due next Wednesday, July 15th! All youth who have previously graduated a dog in our program are eligible for this fun opportunity! Dairy Updates…

  • Building your Dairy Knowledge workshop series. Let’s get together virtually and gain some dairy knowledge. We are offering 4 workshop sessions for youth of all ages who are working in the dairy project area or want to learn more and get involved in dairy. Even though we won’t be testing our dairy knowledge during the Dairy Challenge Contest at State Fair this Fall, we can still challenge ourselves to keep learning. Come join us and meet other dairy interest youth from across the State from the comforts of your home while we cover the dairy animal’s basic areas in nutrition, herd health, reproduction, and records.

  • NYS Junior DAIRY LEADER program (JDL)- Applications due by August 1, 2020 - If youth are interested in the dairy field and want to learn more about careers, personal and professional growth through workshops, tours, and trips… please apply.Applications are done online at http://4h.ansci.cornell.edu/animal-programs/dairy/nys-junior-dairy-leader-application/ and more information about the program can be found here also. The age of youth for the program is 16 to not have reached 19, by Jan. 1st. This year’s class will start out a little differently than it has in the past, but youth will still have the opportunity to attend WDE and the National 4-H Dairy Conference in 2021.
